Shop Fashion Sustainably
Sustainability is possibly the most used buzzword in fashion right now and has become the holy grail of fashion brands from start-ups to established luxury labels. Not without good reason. However, there are many different routes to creating sustainable fashion, including embracing slow fashion models, such as pre-order, and buying quality, garments that will see you through your social calendar easily and for more than one season.
Today, designers like myself are
working to create more sustainable models around consumption. This includes the creation of capsule collections that feature, at their core, a permanent selection of timeless designs that are beautifully crafted in quality fabrics.
While some of these pieces may cost a bit more, when you buy quality you are effectively reducing your need to replace wardrobe items every season, thereby saving money, and reducing manufacturing waste. This is the route I have chosen for my collections: less is truly more.
Some Tips to Consider
Curate Your Wardrobe
Consciously select pieces that reflect your personal style and coordinate well with your existing wardrobe. A curated closet means better choices and a more coherent “look”. Importantly, it’s sustainable financially and environmentally.
Make Every Garment Count
Before adding a new item to your wardrobe, consider what purpose will it fulfil; how long is it likely to last or how soon will you need to replace it; how well made it is; and how often you'll wear it.
Versatility Across Seasons and Events
Can the pieces you’re considering transition seamlessly between seasons and occasions? For example, imagine how you could style the outfit differently, by swapping sandals for boots, adding a sweater or leggings, or layering it over a turtleneck in winter and a T-shirt in summer. Such flexibility extends the life and utility of your entire wardrobe.
Do you Clothes Make you Feel Good?
Another key factor – how does this
garment make me feel? Do I feel happy when I put it on? Does it make me smile? These are possibly the most important questions you should ask yourself. Is this style flattering – does it suit me? With the proper care, will it still make me feel confident and beautiful in five years?
A Positive Future
Sustainable fashion is about more than just environmentally friendly materials—although we are excited about the innovative fabrics on the horizon. True sustainability involves reducing our overall consumption. By embracing some of the tips we’ve shared here, we can begin to alter the fast fashion cycle and help the planet.
Fashion brands have a responsibility now not only to create consciously but also to inform our clients about the benefits of sustainable fashion. Together, we can move towards a more responsible and stylish future and look and feel fabulous in the process.
