Getting Ready for My New York Show at the Agora Gallery – Beyond Borders: an Exhibition of Fine Art From Canada

14 Jul Getting Ready for My New York Show at the Agora Gallery – Beyond Borders: an Exhibition of Fine Art From Canada

Only 3 months away – can’t believe it!  Getting the shipping organized, plane tickets bought and hotel booked…. most importantly – the work is done  – and can be seen here: http://www.agora-gallery.com/artistpage/Claire_Sower.aspx

Last year when we booked this show it seemed like it would never get here and now it’s practically here. Friends coming out for the opening from Vancouver and London, UK, will keep me on track. Going to take this opportunity to spend quality time in the Big Apple and check out some commercial galleries and big museums, oh yes-  and eat, drink and generally have a grand time. Whoo hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you’re going to be in New York on October 15th – the reception at the Agora is from 6-8 pm and I would love to see you there. Alternatively, the exhibition is up from October 9-29. Hope you can make it!

About the Artist

Press Release

Inspired by her artist father and the natural beauty of Vancouver, Claire Sower’s florals are tactile and interpretative, conveying a strong sense of tension and joy.  “I paint flowers because I love them, and because they offer either refuge… or an opportunity for celebration. Flowers exist without judgment,” notes Sower. Eschewing detail in favor of essence, Sower works quickly, using palette knives to build depth by layering paint, allowing colors to mix on the canvas. This brings a sense of immediacy to her work, which conveys a flower’s “living energy.”

Whether brilliantly colorful or nearly monochromatic, Sower’s organic, elemental constructs reveal the essence of nature’s design. She juxtaposes visual simplicity and emotional nuance, creating works that demand one’s full engagement through imagery that infuses a lightness of being into the viewer. Through color and texture, Sower adds an energetic exuberance to every piece, drawing on essentially simple shapes and evocative colors to allow the viewer’s imagination to complete what their eye perceives. In this way, a painting’s initial simplicity belies a deeper, more compelling subtext.
